But having used ketamine in my practice for the past two years, I've been struck by the simplicity of it, the tolerable side effects, and the dramartic and rapid imporovement in depressive symptoms, particularly suicidal ideation. The initial treatment usually consists of three one hour sessions for a ketamine injection or infusion, and then a booster shoit every 1- 2 months. Some patients find that they can get off of the antidepressants they've been taking - thereby reducing side effects. Others find that significantly smaller dosages may be useful to them. it's nice to feel that psychopharamcology is moving into the 21st centruy at last. This image shows ketamine facilitating excitatory neurotransmission which is what makes it such an effective antidepressant.
